Description

The WD Purple 12TB WD121PURZ is the choice when you want the largest possible archive on a single disk. With 12 terabytes you can keep footage from dozens of cameras for many weeks, which banks, government offices and companies with mandatory retention periods often require. Western Digital's official data sheet rates it for up to 64 cameras and 32 AI streams in recorders with 16 or more bays.

Design and durability

It keeps the standard 3.5-inch form factor at 0.66 kg, with tarnish-resistant components for hot and humid sites. Despite the high capacity it stays quiet at 20 dBA idle and 29 dBA seek according to the data sheet.

Performance

It runs in the 7200 RPM class with a 256MB cache and up to 245MB/s transfer rate, speeding up RAID rebuilds and clip retrieval from a large archive. The workload rating is 360TB/year, double that of the smaller Purple drives, with 1.5 million hours MTBF. Power is 6.6W read/write, 5.6W idle and 0.6W standby.

Connectivity

A standard SATA 6Gb/s interface with Advanced Format and RoHS compliance, working with NVRs and surveillance-focused network storage.

Technologies in plain words

  • AllFrame AI: WD's surveillance firmware that helps reduce dropped frames and video gaps while several cameras record at once.
  • CMR recording: conventional magnetic recording that keeps write speed consistent, which matters for an NVR or DVR that never stops writing.
  • 360TB/year workload rating: the amount of data the drive is rated to write and read each year, a more useful figure than raw speed for surveillance.
  • MTBF of 1,500,000 hours: the manufacturer's reliability estimate for continuous 24/7 operation.

Who is it for?

  • Banks and offices with long mandatory retention periods.
  • RAID arrays in recorders with 16 or more bays.
  • Anyone wanting fewer disks while keeping high capacity.

Product FAQ

Is the 12TB drive suitable for RAID?

Yes. The data sheet rates it for recorders with 16 or more bays, which usually run RAID. The 7200 RPM class and 245MB/s transfer rate help arrays rebuild faster.

How many cameras does the WD121PURZ support?

According to the official data sheet it supports up to 64 cameras, plus 32 AI analytics streams. The real number depends on the recorder and camera resolution.

Can I use it in a regular desktop PC?

Yes. The WD121PURZ uses a standard SATA connection and 3.5-inch form factor, so it fits any desktop with a free SATA port and 3.5-inch bay. It is tuned for continuous surveillance writing, so it suits archiving and bulk storage rather than gaming.

What warranty do I get in Iraq?

The drive comes with a one-year warranty from Al-Bab Al-Aali, and you can pay cash on delivery after checking it. Delivery is available to every Iraqi governorate.

What is in the box?

The WD121PURZ ships as a bare drive in protective packaging, without SATA cables or screws, since NVRs, DVRs and PCs normally provide them. Make sure your system has a SATA data and power cable.
